National Course Run - 25/7/18

Among the many events from our history, one that is often forgotten is our central role in the inauguration of the National Cross-Country Championships. It was in the autumn of 1876 that we arranged to meet Spartan Harriers and South London Harriers on 18th November over a course from the Bald-Faced Stag at Buckhurst Hill in Essex. In reality, what was planned was a fairly low-key event and referred to in some publications as, “The London Cross-Country Championship.” However, whether this event was intended as a true national championship is immaterial following what actually came to pass:

“The story of Buckhurst Hill is soon told. South London started fourteen men, Thames thirteen and Spartans five. The rain poured down, the paper ran out, the runners wandered about frozen and lost, no race was declared and it was agreed to re-run at Roehampton.”

After the fiasco, Thames took charge and it was agreed to try again in early 1877, this time at Roehampton. Consequently, the same three clubs came together for “The first race for the championship of the metropolitan paperchase clubs” on 24th February 1877 over an 11¾-mile course from our then headquarters, the King’s Head at Roehampton. It was a double victory for the Thames, taking both the team contest and the individual honours through Percy Stenning.
In all, we hosted seven National Championships between 1877 and 1883. Stenning won the first four of these and we recorded a further team victory in 1879.
As part of our 150th season celebrations, on the evening of 25th July 2018, 22 Saltires staged a run over a course that followed as closely as possible the route of those original National Championships. Of the 22, nine completed the entire route from the King's Head at Roehampton, across the Common and all the way to Morden Park via Merton church and then back via West Barnes Lane, New Malden and Cottenham Park. Others joined along the route at the Ridgeway, Morden and New Malden.
