65th Alumni Race - 16/12/17

On a dry damp day on Wimbledon Common, a record field of 280 runners from 38 teams took on the challenging 5 mile course. After a week of rain, the conditions were perfect for muddy cross-country. No one got lost in the notorious ‘Butts’ and all came home more or less in one piece, to the credit of the Thames pioneers. The first fourteen finished within 30 minutes with the noble back markers in just over an hour.
Sherborne recovered their winning ways of 2013-2015 and regained the King Henry VIII cup for the Team Open with 44 points, ahead of Winchester (55) and new arrivals Perse (93).
William Ryle-Hodges (Eton) took the Norman Berry Cup as the individual winner in 26’ 51’’, having led for most of the race, with James McMullan (Charterhouse and Thames Captain) second in 27’ 21” and Harry Lane (Sherborne) third in 27’ 28”. Cameron Payas (Rochester Maths) was fourth, just ahead of three times winner James Hoad (Winchester).
The newly awarded Wyndham Halswelle Cup for the Age Adjusted winner went to Simon Baines (Winchester) with a score of 79.48%, a small margin ahead of Ryle-Hodges – 79.39% and Edward Short – 79.36%.
With a welcome increase in ladies, Lucy Ashe (Charterhouse) was awarded the Old Coventrian Cup in 31’ 41” which she won in 2015. She was followed by Emma Wood (Sedbergh) in 35’ 10” and Annabelle Evans (Westminster) in 35’ 59”. With three to score, Sebergh was first Ladies Team (25) ahead of Denstone (28) and King Henry VIII (30).
The Old Brentwood Trophy for the V40 went to Rochester Maths; the Chataway Cup for V50 to Dulwich; the Old Denstonian Cup for V60 to Denstone; and the newly awarded Jane Bubear Cup for V65 also to Denstone. For the first time the results have also thrown up the Age Adjusted Team result and the winner was Charterhouse. Other individual class winners were V40 – Simon Baines (Winchester) in 29’ 19”; V50 - Edward Short (Charterhouse) in 31’ 12”; V60 – Hugh Balfour (Eton) in 35’ 56”; V65 – Peter Giles (Bournemouth) in 37’ 10”; and V70 – Richard Barrington (Denstone) in 44’ 44”.
