European Masters' Athletics Championships, Aarhus - 3/8/17
There were some fantastic Thames successes at the European Masters' Athletics Championships in Aarhus. Many congratulations to Anna Garnier who is now a double European Champion. Competing in the W60 category, Anna won the 1500m in a time of 5:46.93 and the 5000m in 21.18.53. Of the 1500m, she recounts that the race did not go entirely to plan; she wanted to go out in the group but they would not go with her and she had no choice but to run at the front with Rita Schubert (eventual silver medallist) snapping at her heels. She took it steady and waited until the final 100m before sprinting as fast as she could and winning by about half a second. The 5000m followed a similar pattern with Anna front-running ahead of the Swedish and German athletes as again no one would go with her. This time it was a little more comfortable as they had faded by the bell and Anna took the gold by about 8 seconds having led from gun to tape.
