BMAF Relays, Sutton Park - 21/5/17

Our M45 team managed the double double (BMAF XC Championships and Road Relay Championships last year and this year) in placing first in the BMAF road relays at Sutton Park. The story, as told by Ben Reynolds:
“I tucked in behind a Tyne Bridge runner with plans to kill him on the last hill. In the event he took 16 secs out of me from the pond! Nevertheless I was 15 secs clear of third running 13 secs slower than last year (slightly above the 9 sec coefficient of deterioration par) in 15:40 (which ended up as 3rd fastest lap of the day).
Matt Lynas held his position magnificently and bucked the coeff of deterioration by running 4 secs faster than last year with 16:54 but we were now 25 secs down on Tyne Bridge
In drizzly rain Andy Weir did his usual sterling job and took the lead with a 16:28 (27 secs down on last year’s heroic last lap) and handed over with a fragile 5 sec gap over Tyne Bridge. He was feeling aggrieved at having to run in dodgy weather but thought better of complaining when the heavens opened with a Biblical downpour just as poor Simon Baines breasted the first hill and headed out on the exposed top road. He was there to be shot at by the chasing hordes but held them off magisterially with a smooth 16:12 in what was his first Sutton Park outing since 1995ish. A fast finishing Preston overhauled a tiring Tyne Bridge and our final winning margin was 14 secs. Our finishing time was the same to the very second as last year.
Finally, we closed our first ever V75 team with Sydney Norris, Jeremy Denny and Michael Johnson doing the club proud. Michael ran the second quickest leg of the day and Thames finished second behind Bradford & Bingley.
All in all, a satisfactory day at the office.

Green Belt Relay - 21/5/17

Thames closed two mixed teams in the Greenbelt Relay, the annual circumnavigation of Greater London run over 22 legs. Not only did we close two teams but we took the mixed team title finishing nearly 3 hrs ahead of 2nd place (23hrs, 13mins and 37secs). Not content with that, we took the King Of The Hills Title and James McMullan took the performance of the weekend prize for breaking the course records for both his race legs, both being particularly hilly. Our second team finished up as 5th Mixed team out of 29 and came 12th overall (27hrs, 26mins and 36secs). The big story of the weekend, though, was how we as a mixed team almost won the overall title, almost knocking a solid Serpentine Men’s A of the top perch, a position they have held since 2010. At the end of day 1 we were somewhat gob-smacked to find ourselves heading the leaderboard by 7 minutes. Day 2 was tougher, epitomised by Ed Catmur pulling his hamstring midway through his leg but struggling through, in obvious considerable pain, to ensure was stayed I contention. At the end of the race, for a few brief glorious minutes we thought we had taken the title, by all of 45 seconds. Rigorous checking spotted that the organisers had mixed up some of our results and we had in fact finished 2nd by 5 minutes, which in itself was the closest finish the race had had for some years.

Richmond Park Film - 7/5/17

The Friends of Richmond Park have produced a film on the park. The film has some excellent photography and narration by Sir David Attenborough and, whilst showing the park in all its magnificence, it also invites viewers to help protect it and its wildlife for generations to come.
There are two versions: a short 4-minute version; and the full length film, which is 21 minutes.
A link to both versions can be found here.
