Thames' men fielded 20 runners at Mitcham Common, and with good performances at the sharp end and close packing ran out in 3rd place. First back was James McMullan, channelling all the strength from his marathon training to finish 6th. Richard Kowenicki held off new Thames member, Martin Alvarez-Espinar, in a sprint for the line in 17th and 18th. Howard Bristow, using the race as a spring-board back to fitness followed in 22nd. Good packing from Neil Chisholm (30th), Gordon Pearce (38th), Martin Shore (41st), your Captain (47th), Chris Rye (62nd) and Richard Ollington (67th) ensured a strong finish. Thames are now 6th in the table and less than 55 points from 5th. James McMullan currently ranks 2nd on the overall individual leader-board. The battle for scoring places was hotly contested. Surrey Cross-Country Championships, Lloyd Park (men) - 7/1/17

James McMullan led the way for the men, finishing 9th and qualifying to represent Surrey in the Inter Counties. Showing his marathon training is taking him into a rich vein of form, Martin Shore came through for 24th. Your Captain was with him at the end of the first lap, but as he has done so many times in the 18 years I have been racing him, Martin switched up the gears and left me for dust (or rather mud I suppose). Despite the lard, your Captain finished in 48th, followed by Brian Thursby-Pelham in 57th, Andy Weir in 73rd, Ed Catmur in 85th, Anthony Doolittle in 100th and Iain Sheridan closed in 102nd.
